Science
Since the caterpillars' arrival, the students have patiently watched them grow from tiny larva to big, fuzzy caterpillars. Then, observed their caterpillars spin a silk web, which they then hung from in a J-shape symbolizing they were almost ready for their transformation. Next, the students watched as their caterpillars formed their chrysalises. The students will now notice the color of their chrysalis change from a shimmering green and gold to dark brown, which will tell us our butterflies are getting ready to emerge.
As the students have been watching this amazing process take place, they have learned an abundance of information about these interesting insects. The students have discovered what molting is, how and why a caterpillar spins silk, why a caterpillar hangs in a J-shape, and the parts of a chrysalis. Try quizzing your child about what happens to the caterpillar when it's in its chrysalis!

Our insects have arrived!! Over the next several weeks, the students will be observing and studying six types of insects. The insects include ladybugs, ants, crickets, praying mantises, a Luna moth, and a cockroach. The students have been working incredibly hard on their research!
Our Luna Moth hatched! Last week we released him in the nature center to live his life in his natural habitat.
Can you find our Luna Moth?

Math
We are currently on Topic 15: Geometry! Geometry, the study of shapes in space and of spatial relationships, is important because it offers children opportunities to relate mathematics to the real world. Research suggests that spatial ability is related to problem-solving ability. Developing children's geometric concepts and spatial sense makes it more likely that they will benefit from the use of models and diagrams in other strands of mathematics.
Big Map
The students had the opportunity to explore Asia on the big map!!
Discovery Museum Visit
The Discovery Museum visited Winn Brook! The students learned about the water cycle, reviewed what they previously learned about temperature, and viewed different types of clouds. At the end of the visit, the students created their own clouds with shaving cream!
