Our Specialist Schedule:

Tuesday – Physical Education with Mr. Franey (1:40 pm)
Wednesday – Library with Mrs. Ruane (11:25 am)
Thursday – Music with Mrs. Bettinelli (2:10 pm)
Friday – Physical Education with Mr. Franey (9:00 am)
Arrival and Dismissal:
The students arrive to school by 8:45 am and enter the building from the Cross Street entrance. Students who ride the bus will arrive through the front doors and walk down to our classroom. Our classroom, room 102, is located just before the gymnasium lobby. On the first day of school, teachers will be in the hallway to help students find their classrooms. It is important for your child to arrive to school on time, contributing to a smooth start to the day.
At the end of the school day (3:00 pm-Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri; 1:50 pm-Wed), I will walk the students to the Cross Street entrance. Prior to the first day of school, many parents decide with their child on a special meeting spot. Students who ride the bus will walk to the front door where a teacher will wait with them to ensure they board the correct bus. For the first few days, students who attend After-School Care will be escorted by a teacher. If a change in arrival/dismissal is to occur, please remember to send a note or email. It is safest to send me the email before the school day begins or contact the office if it is later in the school day.
Snack and Lunch:
Children bring their own snack and drink each day. It is helpful if the snack is marked and wrapped separately from their lunch. In first grade, students eat lunch in the cafeteria! Children may buy lunch with milk included. Menus will be sent home each month. You may also choose to pay for your child's lunches online at: http://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/bps/Home/Fees/Meal-Payments. Once you have prepaid, your child will pay for his/her lunch using the PIN number they receive. It is helpful if you can review your child’s PIN number with him/her before they begin buying lunch.
During the first full week of school, I encourage parents to pack a lunch and drink for their child. Although this is not necessary, it does help the children as they learn how to use the cafeteria comfortably. Buying lunch is a routine that will be explicitly taught and practiced throughout the first few weeks. I will be helping the children as they go through the lunch line, find their tables, and settle in.
If your child will bring his/her lunch, please send food that your child enjoys and can easily manage on his/her own. Many first graders find it difficult to manage and finish their lunch when they have various containers to open and ingredients to assemble. Please label all lunch boxes, thermoses, and containers with your last name, as they can be easily lost or misplaced.
If your child has any food allergies, please notify me as well as our school nurse.
Home/School Folder:
Each child will receive his/her own home/school folder. The folder will serve as an organized way to transport notices and worksheets back and forth. Please notify your child if there is a note in the folder you want him/her to pass along to me.
Health/Absences:
Attendance at school is very important; however, it is also imperative that you keep your child at home if he/she has a temperature or is ill. Sending unwell children to school will only increase chances of greater illness and will expose other children unnecessarily. If your child is to be out sick, please phone the school to let the office know of the absence.
Birthdays:
Birthdays are such an exciting time in First Grade! Due to increasing concerns about food allergies, the Belmont Public Schools has adopted a “no food” policy. Since we are unable to celebrate birthdays with special treats, some parents choose to donate an item to the classroom in their child’s name instead, or to simply let us borrow the item for the day. To provide parents with ideas, I have created an Amazon and Lakeshore Learning wish list that include books as well as many fun and educational games for our class. You can find the link on our "wish list" tab. For students with summer birthdays, I will select a date in the spring to celebrate.
To avoid hurt feelings, please do not send birthday party invitations to school to be distributed unless everyone from the class is included. Thank you for your understanding!
Communication:
Parent involvement is essential to children’s education. I look forward to developing a partnership with you in order to encourage your child's growth in first grade. If you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to share important/exciting news, you are always welcome to send in a note with your child, email me at [email protected], or call the school at 617-993-5700. While I will not always have an opportunity to speak with you in person immediately before or after school, I am more than happy to arrange a meeting time with you at our mutual convenience.
