Mathematics
enVisionMATH uses problem based interactive learning and visual learning to deepen conceptual understanding.
enVisionMATH is aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
We will be focusing on:
Phonics
Wilson Fundations is a literacy program used to explicitly teach phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling skills.
We will also use the Lively Letters program to reinforce letter sounds. In the Lively Letters program, oral kinesthetics, imagery, hand cues, music, and mnemonic stories are heavily utilized to make it easier for students to learn and remember letter sounds.
Literacy
Daily 5 is a structure for literacy time in which students develop independent work habits to increase and strengthen their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

In addition, we will be utilizing the Lucy Calkin's reading program this school year.
Writer's Workshop
Writer's Workshop is a structure in which students take part in a series of mini-lessons and then apply them in their own writing in order to develop their writing skills. Students will also learn about writing for different purposes, and will explore different types of writing related to these purposes. We begin by focusing on sentence mechanics, and reinforce this skill throughout the entire school year. We imbed this skill in the following writing genres:
Science
Our science units provide hands-on learning experiences that encourage students to ask questions, make predictions, explore, observe, and draw conclusions. Our units of study are:
Social Studies
In social studies, students learn basic map skills including identifying and utilizing the cardinal directions and how to locate land, oceans, rivers, mountains, etc. They also learn about symbols representing the USA, and study the significance of important American landmarks.
Social/Emotional Learning
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following areas:

- Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
- Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
- Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
